MEMORIALS NAME:
Deadline—Tuesday, 9/3
at the beginning of class
Respond to the following questions (in your own opinion):
Who should design them?
What should the process look like for selection?
How long do we wait to build one after a conflict happens?
What kinds of situations merit a national memorial?
What elements or factors make for a successful monument?
(consider the viewer, the country, the soldiers, children,
adults, young, old—these are related by different audiences…)
Now, use the internet to gather information about the
following questions and then express in your own opinions. Type your
thoughts/responses to the following questions/prompts and print out a HARD
COPY.
Choose either the recent MLK Memorial in Washington DC or
the 9/11 Memorial in NYC:
1. What
did the designer do in the memorial that you think is remarkable?
2. What
parts of the memorial are you most interested in experiencing?
3. What
do you think about any controversy surrounding the memorial?
4. Is
there anything you think is missing? Do you think the designer should have done
anything differently, added something…not included something—approached
something differently—think about what it’s made of—how it’s made, etc.
